Tommy Kay - The Interview
Flaunt & Strictly Frisky PR Manager Darren C took time out from his busy schedule ahead of the Pukka Up event at Why Not this Sunday to catch up with our top dj Tommy Kay (formerly Gallo) to see what he has been up to and what he's got planned for the rest of the year...
Flaunt has taken a few months off but will be back soon, are you looking forward to it?
Always look forward to Flaunt and the fact we have had a break just makes the return even more appealing as the music, vibe and general scene seems to be starting to thrive again and this will make our come back with our 6th Birthday Party even more spectacular.
2009 has been a new start for you on many levels, what have you been up to and what's planned for the rest of 09?
Had a slower than usual start to the year on the gig front but have been kept fairly busy with Strictly Frisky, Luvely parties and also some pre bar work. Also played with Judge Jules at the start of the year so have been fairly steady, looking forward to the summer in Ibiza and also my residencies in Edinburgh. I've actually been spending much needed time in the studio so really enjoying that side of things
Ibiza should be an exciting trip, what have you got planned for out there?
Tommy - Wow yeah cant wait for Ibiza this year as have a fully packed schedule where I will be playing with not only some of the biggest clubs but also an array of top dj's on the island including Pukka Up @ Es Paradis and the famous Boat Party, Judgement Sunday @ Eden, Bar M, Plastik, Orange Corner and more dates to be confirmed so its all good.
Darren - Yeah can't wait for the 27th July at Es Paradis with Pukka Up and the Freemasons, messy times ahead
Tommy - Exactly it will be nice to play with the Freemasons again after playing at Flaunt with them last year
You have dropped your alias Tommy Gallo, what was your thinking behind that?
Tommy - I have had 2 different Dj names for a while now and that was down to my love for funky house and hard house and had to find a way to differentiate my sounds when playing to specific crowds, however now I am going to be fully branded as Tommy Kay as this is my original Dj name and also my name ha, which will also make it easier to promote for my agent Colossal Promotions.
Darren - Oh is that what is behind it, we thought you got married and had to change your name to your husband's?
Tommy - Ha ha very good you know that couldn't be further from the truth. Its Tommy Kay not Tommy Gay ha
Production work is something that you have been planning for a while, any projects nearing completion that we will be hearing soon?
Yeah been in the studio with Flaunt resident Scott Wood working on some exciting new production material and we are now working on our fourth project to push in Ibiza this year, also back in the studio to finally complete the Lovetones track "Just Keep Thinking About You" with Dean Newton which we are really looking forward to this as the track has had a lot of interest on the dance floors and also by dj's nationwide
What has been you most memorable moment at Flaunt?
Tommy - Had so many great nights at Flaunt and it would be virtually impossible to pick just one... John getting his d!ck out behind the decks when we had Bob Sinclair was memorable for A. Bobs face and B. Johns quote "that's not a boab.... That's a Boaby" as he whipped it out onto the turntable hahahaha priceless!! and on a more serious note watching Jason Herd dj on 3 decks was pretty inspirational as this was the push I needed to start my own 3 deck assault.
Darren - Ha ha that is shocking, George is still scarred from that night and he will probably come out in a cold sweat when he reads this.
What is your favourite track of all time?
Love Yomanda - Synth & Strings and probably always will always brings a smile to my face.
What's hot in your box for the summer?
Difficult to predict what's going to be big this year but there are a few decent tunes floating about just now.
Henrik B remix of "Just Cant Get Enough" will be huge this year as will Arno Costs mix of "Love Takes Over by David Guetta. Hardwell's remix of "Show Me Love" will also do the business and I predict a more housey sound to Ibiza this year , with huge build ups, Sirens and pianos taking over.
We'll wait and see!
What DJ has inspired you the most and who would you most like to play with?
The legend that is Carl Cox without any doubt. Love his energy and enthusiasm and he always delivers live... Enough said really
Tell us something we don't know about you?
Tommy - Hahaha not really sure if there is anything you guys don't know.... I like Sambuca?
Darren - That is the understatement of the year, come on dish the dirt and let everyone know just one thing?
Tommy - In my previous life I used to be a porn star, well so I've been told!!!
And finally, this Sunday Pukka Up return to Why Not for the first time since the sell out New Years Eve party, are you bang up for it?
Tommy - After missing the new year party it will be good to be involved and can't wait to meet the lads as I heard they all missed my electric chat.
Darren - We all did that night mate and I'm sure it will be one hell of a party
** You can see Tommy live in the mix with Pukka Up at Why Not this Sunday, doors open at 10pm**
